A dryer that isn’t heating can be caused a multitude of parts. Below are a number of videos that cover the majority of the causes and how to diagnose each one. The most likely issues are covered first, with the lesser likely issues below, followed by some model specific possible causes.
How to test the power coming into a dryer. How to test at the terminal block, the cord, wall outlet and the breaker in the house’s fuse box.
How to test your Motor when you have no heat. For safety reasons, power for the heating element is routed through the motor. The switch on the motor can fail so that power is not properly able to flow to the element. This video give a good understanding of what is happening and how to test.
How to test the timer when you don’t have heat.
Burnt Wiring. Sometime one of the wires that connects to the heating element will completely burn off and loose power to the element, like shown in the image. You can find this issue at the element terminal but sometimes it is at the thermostat terminal as well. In addition to completely burnt off wiring, be sure to look for loose and burnt (but still connected) terminal connections. This typically shows up at the connections to the timer, motor, element and thermostats.
Kenmore EvenHeat Dryers. Some Kenmore dryers are equipped with a 4″x 6″ circuit board found next to the timer. If your dryer has this it will also have 2 black relays located inside of the control panel as well. One relay goes to the motor and the other goes to the heating element. If you have eliminated all other possible causes for no heat, the heater relay might be bad. The easy thing to do is to swap the wires on the two relays. If the heater relay is bad and you swapped the wires, so that now the wires are going to the motor, the motor will not start when you press the start button. The below video is just to show you what the relays look like and where they are located. If the relays are good the issue might be the control board.
GE Dryers. The design of GE dryer is different than that of Whirlpool and Maytag Models. Use the video below to test a GE dryer.
